Covid-19 Vaccinations – Over 80s years of age

Hospital hub sites are now receiving the first batches of the vaccine and are planning to deliver it to priority groups, as confirmed by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) and the Chief Medical Officer (CMO). The JCVI advises that the first priorities for the COVID-19 vaccination programme should be the prevention of mortality and the maintenance of the health and social care systems.

As the risk of mortality from COVID-19 increases with age, prioritisation is primarily based on age. The immediate task is to vaccinate residents in care homes and their carers, the over 80’s population and frontline health and social care workers.

The hospital hubs are making contact with eligible patients over 80 years of age to offer them a vaccination appointment at the hospital site. It is expected that the first vaccination appointments will be delivered this week. There is no need to contact the practice in relation to this.

The vaccine will be offered at the following location  you will be invited in depending on supply.  Again, please do not contact the surgery about your vaccination but wait to be invited:

  • Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust (Basildon Hospital site)

There are only five situations where the Covid-19 vaccine cannot be given:

1) Allergy to it before.

2) Anaphylaxis reaction to components of the vaccine which the vaccinator will check

3) Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers

4) Women planning to get pregnant in the next 2 months

5) Children under 16

Anyone else can have the vaccine regardless of the medication they are on and they do not need to check with their GP.  The data from the clinical trials is very reassuring as no safety concerns were reported in those who received the vaccine.
